Spicy Sweet “Straight from Heaven” Sloppy Hoagies

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This recipe is my modern twist on the legendary Georgia-born Manna Sandwich, often called the “Straight from Heaven” sandwich. The original was rich and saucy, loaded with seasoned ground beef and melty Swiss cheese.

My version keeps that spirit but adds a little heat, a little sweet, and some fresh crunch. Think: garlic-buttered hoagie rolls, smoky-spicy sauce, savory beef, tangy pickled onions, and gooey Swiss cheese. It’s nostalgic and new — a sloppy hoagie that feels indulgent yet balanced.

Ingredients (Makes 4 Hoagies)

For the Sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp sriracha or chili garlic sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

For the Beef

  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15 works best)
  • ½ small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)

For Assembly

  • 4 hoagie rolls (6-inch), split
  • 3 tbsp softened butter
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup pickled red onions
  • ½ cup shredded lettuce (optional for crunch)

Instructions

  1. Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, ketchup, sriracha, honey, mustard, and smoked paprika. Taste and adjust spice/sweetness balance to your liking.
  2. Cook the Beef
Heat a large skillet over medium-high. Add the beef and onion, breaking the meat into crumbles. Stir in soy sauce, garlic powder, basil, and chili flakes. Cook until the beef is browned and saucy (about 7–8 minutes). Drain any excess grease if needed.
  3. Toast the Rolls
Preheat the broiler. Mix butter and garlic together. Spread onto cut sides of each roll and broil for 1–2 minutes until golden and crisp.
  4. Assemble
Spread sauce on both sides of the toasted rolls. Lay down a slice of Swiss cheese on the bottom half of each, broil again just until melted and gooey.
  5. Load It Up
Pile the hot beef mixture over the cheese. Top with pickled onions and shredded lettuce for crunch. Smear more sauce on the top roll, close, and serve hot.

Tips & Swaps

  • Meat Options: Ground turkey, chicken, or even lentils work for a lighter version.
  • Extra Heat: Add chopped jalapeños to the beef or swap Swiss for pepper jack.
  • Make Ahead: Beef filling and sauce can be prepped up to 2 days in advance — assemble just before serving.
  • Party Idea: Use slider buns instead of hoagies for crowd-friendly mini sandwiches.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these hoagies with:

  • A pile of crispy oven fries or sweet potato wedges
  • A side of crunchy coleslaw
  • An ice-cold beer or a crisp lemonade to balance the heat
